Markleigh Swanson has been selected for the Executive Director position with Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance (SCCA). Markleigh replaces Shaine Gans and Diane McBride who recently stepped down as Executive Director and Associate Director, respectively. She will collaborate with the BLM staff at Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum to continue to engage the community through outreach, education and stewardship to promote responsible enjoyment of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and surrounding public lands.
Markleigh recently moved to Montezuma County from Tucson, AZ. She graduated from the University of Arizona, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Shortly thereafter, she began her career in non-profits in the membership department of the Tucson Botanical Gardens where she served in various roles, eventually managing their membership department as the Director of Membership. When not working, Markleigh and her family enjoy hiking, backpacking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking and skiing.
Markleigh Swanson states, “I have always been passionate about the environment and stewardship. I relish the chance to learn more about the enchanting Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and to further explore the surrounding areas. I think more people should be able to experience the wonders of nature but it is more important than ever to do so responsibly to preserve these natural and cultural treasures for generations to come. I’m very happy to be a part of the conservation process.”
