🕙 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
📍 Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center & Museum, 27501 CO-184, Dolores, CO 81323
Join us for a special cultural demonstration celebrating traditional Hopi art forms passed down through generations. Marvene Dawahoya, Tewa, will share the intricate process of weaving sifter baskets using yucca—a plant considered sacred in Hopi culture. Her work is inspired by the natural world and guided by teachings from her stepmother and community.
Alongside her, Nuvadi Dawahoya of Shungopavi Village will demonstrate his masterful carving techniques using cottonwood root. Known for his award-winning work, Nuvadi uses traditional tools and detailed wood-burning to bring his carvings to life with texture, depth, and symbolism.
This live demonstration is a rare opportunity to connect with the living traditions of the Hopi people, hear directly from the artists about their inspiration and techniques, and witness their artistry in action.
The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and support Indigenous programming at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
We hope to see you there!
